1932 Sunbeam Model 90 Project
1932 Sunbeam Model 90 Project
The Model 90 was Sunbeam’s succesfull racing model of the 1920s and remained in the line up in the early 1930s being offered to privateers as the top of the range model, primarily suited for racing. In 1931 the cost of the Model 90 was 90 Pounds against 75 Pounds for the Model 9, so not your ordinary roadster at any rate. By 1933 the Model 90 was replaced by the Model 95 and an era of the twin port 500cc OHV Sunbeam ended.
This interesting 1932 Sunbeam Model 90 project has come from long term ownership. Matching numbers for frame and engine as evidenced in the old registration documents that follow the Sunbeam. Other period documents show that the Sunbeam was imported to Denmark in the 1950s by an English Gentleman. The bike then stood still with him from 1956 until 1980 when it changed ownership and a restoration began.
The engine and gearbox has been rebuild. Frame painted. Wheels rebuild. The bike is 99% complete with a rear stand, silencers and the speedo drive being the main things missing. They are all standard Sunbeam items. Everything else is there, all complete and in very good condition right down to the inverted levers, original Amal twin float carburettor specific to the Model 90, Lucas bronze headlamp with bakelite switch, original Lucas magdyno etc.
This 1932 Sunbeam Model 90 has some notable differences to other Model 90s of the same era: the petrol tank is noticeably larger, so is the oil tank (almost double capacity) and the oil tank has the filler neck on the left hand side (Isle of Man TT style). The engine is also fitted with hairpin valve springs and there is foot gear change as standard. Clearly the bike was build for racing and/or very fast roadwork.
A lovely and straight forward project that is assembled as a complete bike and comes with its 1950s registration document.
