1938 Rudge Special. 500cc OHV.
1938 Rudge Special. 500cc OHV.
This 1938 Rudge Special is still wearing most of its original paint and the patina is quite unique but please dont judge the Special on the patinated appearance, the bike goes very well.
Frame and engine numbers are confirmed as the original pairing, ie. matching numbers.
This is a well kept and well serviced Rudge Special as testified by the previous owner who wanted to maintain the original, “oily rag looks” while keeping the Rudge mechanically in top tune.
As part of a recent service, a new piston and piston rings were recently fitted and the original Smiths speedo was refubished by a specialist.
The engine is smooth and with good compression and is mechanically quiet. The new piston still needs to be run in carefully for the next few hundred miles. There is a slight oil leak from the engine when standing still and the best cure, would be to fit an anti sump valve, an example being the original Velocette anti sump valve which has always worked faultlessly. Gearbox selects gears easily and is in good working order.
The petrol and oil tank was painted in the past in a semi matte black to match the original paint on the rest of the bike but otherwise everything is original paint and plate with a lovely worn patina.
The study rear rack that is fitted, can be taken off very easily.
Ready to use on the road, with all electrics functioning well.
