1953 Alvis Healey Sports Cabriolet 3.0Litre
1953 Alvis Healey Sports Cabriolet 3.0Litre
The 1953 Alvis Healey Sports Convertible is one of those rare postwar machines where elegance and performance found a perfect, if fleeting, harmony. Born from the partnership between Donald Healey and Alvis, it combined the sharp, competition-bred chassis of the Healey Silverstone with the smooth, six-cylinder power of Alvis’s renowned 3.0-liter engine. With twin SU carburettors giving 106 horsepower, it was no fire-breathing racer, but in an era of rationing and restraint, it offered the intoxicating promise of 100 miles per hour in open air. Quite a luxury at a time when ‘The Ton’ was a near mythical achievement for the lucky few.
With just 25 examples produced, it is safe to say the Alvis Healey Sports Convertible was and is for the few. A hand-formed body in aluminium by Panelcraft of Birmingham, gave the car a lean stance, part sporting roadster, part refined grand tourer, but also a heavy price tag. This car was for the men or women who could afford to splash out on the luxuries of life, even in a time of austerity.
The Alvis Healey was a car that carried the optimism of 1950s motoring and today is valued as much for its historical significance as for its blend of British craftsmanship and sporting character. Equally at home on fast autobahn stretches as it is on winding English lanes.
This particular 1953 Alvis Healey Sports Cabriolet was sold new in the UK with registration number PJH 274. In 1988 the car was sold to sunny California where it resided until 2007 before returning to its previous owner in Belgium.
In 2011 the car was sold to a respected, professional classic car mechanic in Denmark, who embarked on a complete restoration with the intention to use the car for himself.
As you would expect from a professional mechanic working solely with classic and vintage cars, and in this case a car produced in very scarce numbers, the entire process is well documented and there is a large photographic report of the entire restoration. Every part of the car was photographed in the process from disassembly to final assembly and gives a very good impression of the skill and meticulous attention to detail that went into the restoration. The restoration was finished in 2016 and the Alvis Healey registered for the road in 2017. Despite being built for his own use, the car has remained mostly on display in his workshop with the odd, short drive and warm up of the engine to keep it fit.
The Alvis Healey is now ready for its next owner to enjoy and benefitting from the comprehensive restoration work that has gone into bringing this unique car back to life.
