1954 Norton International Clubman M40 5th place Isle of Man TT
Isle of Man TT racing heritage anyone?
This 1954 Norton International Clubman is an exceptionally rare and historically significant machine, being one of just three examples built by Norton Motorcycles to full Clubman’s racing specification to compete in the Isle of Man TT that year.
Ridden by Geoff Tanner in the 1954 Junior Clubmans TT to an impressive fifth-place finish against strong factory-backed competition, particularly from BSA Gold Stars. Geoff Tanner delivered an outstanding performance, finishing fifth overall with an average speed of 81.54 mph and setting a remarkable lap at 83 mph—an enduring benchmark for a 350cc International. Tanner’s performance on this machine marked a key moment in his career, as he would go on to achieve further success the following year aboard the legendary Norton Manx, winning both the Junior and Senior Manx Grands Prix.
This rare Norton International Clubman retains all matching numbers, including its rare numbered close-ratio gearbox, and is a highly original example in every respect.
Restored 16 years ago by respected Norton restorer Bernie Allen in the UK, the Clubman has seen minimal use since and remains in outstanding condition. Its history is well documented, with accompanying period photographs of Geoff Tanner in action, contemporary magazine coverage, and a later feature in the magazine Classic Rider, celebrating the reunion of Geoff Tanner with the very machine he raced following its restoration. Furthermore, a copy of the Norton Works Records supplied by the VMCC is included.
Importantly the Clubman is still in race tune with Manx piston, Manx cams, Amal TT carburettor, Lucas Racing Magneto and the original close ratio gearbox. Furthermore, the original Dunlop chrome rims are still in place.
With its rarity, documented competition history, and preserved originality, this Norton International Clubman is a truly special and collectible piece of British motorcycling heritage.
