1950 Ariel VCH Scrambler 500cc OHV

The 1950 Ariel VCH (Competition Red Hunter) was a competition motorcycle developed from Ariel’s successful Red Hunter series. Introduced for trials and scrambles competition, it featured a tuned single-cylinder OHV engine with distinctive magnesium crankcases, as supplied in 1950 and 1951 only.

Ariel supplied the VCH model mainly to riders and dealers involved in competition events rather than as a mainstream road model and consequently, they are rare to find.

In performance terms, the VCH was renowned for its strong low-speed torque, excellent traction, and agile handling. These qualities made it highly successful in British off-road competition during the early 1950s and helped establish Ariel as one of the leading names in trials and scrambles motorcycling. The VCH weighed approximately 132 kg, making it significantly lighter than many contemporary British singles. 

This example of the VCH is one of approximately 150 examples with magnesium crankcase produced for 1950 and 1951 only. Confirmed matching numbers for engine and frame as documented in the accompanying Works Records.

Mechanically the VCH is spot on, starts easily and with good compression. The gearbox selects freely and accurately and the clutch engages firmly. BTH Competition magneto was rebuild and gives a reliable spark.

The VCH has taken part in a few casual Classic Trials over the years with its last long-term owner of 30+ years. 

This is a beautiful and potent Ariel scrambles bike to use for competition or to enjoy in a collection. Regardless of use, the Ariel VCH are few and far in between.
